Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro officially announced… without Google Apps

While the Mate 30 Series runs EMUI 10, which is based on Android 10, there won’t be Google Apps on board when the phone releases.

Huawei Mate 30 Series - Rethink Possibilities

A massive leak earlier this week outed everything Huawei planned on announcing today but that didn’t stop the company from going forward with the event. The company announced the Huawei Mate 30, Mate 30 5G, Mate 30 Pro, Mate 30 Pro 5G, and the Porsche Design Mate 30 RS. The new flagship series was launched in Munich, Germany with the slogan “Rethink Possibilities.”

Building upon the design of the Mate 20 Series, the Mate 30 Pro features an ultra-narrow notch design, thin bezels, and a 6.53-inch 2400×1176 FHD+ Huawei Horizon OLED Display which curves around the edges. Not only does the curved edge maximize the display area, but it also features the company’s new Intuitive Side-touch Interaction feature. This new feature removes the physical volume buttons and uses virtual keys to control the volume of the device. The Mate 30, on the other hand, features a 6.62-inch 2340×1080 FHD+ curved OLED display.

On the performance side of things, the Mate 30 Series is powered by the Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G chips. With a 16-core GPU, the 7nm+ chips support 2G, 3G, and 4G networks while the 5G versions support 5G StandAlone and Non-StandAlone modes. The 5G versions of the devices also boast 14 antennas for “ground-breaking speed with unrivalled connectivity.”

One of the bigger changes users of previous Mate devices will notice is the new four-camera metallic halo enclosure. Huawei wanted to mirror the design of a DSLR camera. The four cameras on the new devices include the 40MP Cine Camera, a 40MP SuperSensing Dual-Camera, and an 8MP Telephoto Camera with 3x Optical, 5x Hybrid, and up to 30x Digital Zoom.

The SuperSensing Cine Camera is a Dual-main camera system capable of taking stunning photos that rival high-end cameras. The Cine Camera features a large 1/1.54-inch sensor size with a high maximum Video ISO of 51200 to capture videos with an extended dynamic range at 4K/60 fps as well as ultra slow-motion at the highest 7680 fps. It also supports 4K Low-light Ultra-wide time-lapse video. The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro also offers pro-bokeh capabilities while recoding for professional looking results. Additionally, the second of the dual-camera system is a 1/1.7-inch HUAWEI SuperSensing Camera which attracts 40% more lights to deliver stunning results in low light conditions with an impressive light sensitivity of ISO409600, making it the best low light one-shot device ever even for ultra-wide shots.

Huawei PR

We had the pleasure of reviewing the Huawei Mate 20 Pro earlier this year and the camera was the best I’d ever seen to date. On that note, it will be interesting to see if the Mate 30 camera can outshine that of its predecessor.

Huawei also outlined some of the key user experience and other features of the Huawei Mate 30 Series which are:

  • 4200mAh (Mate 30) or 4500mAh (Mate 30 Pro) battery
  • 27W Wireless SuperCharge and 40W SuperCharge support
  • Huawei Acoustic Display Technology for high-quality audio sound-emitting display
  • EMUI10 operating system featuring a contemporary magazine inspired layout, Always-On-Display (AOD) where the colour of the lock screen changes throughout the day;
  • Dark Mode brings enhanced legibility making the screen look gentler and more comfortable when night falls;
  • Intuitive Side-touch Interaction to customise invisible virtual keys for volume adjustment, gaming and camera set-up as well as being ideal for both right and left-handed users;
  • AI gesture control for contactless screen interaction, whereas AI Auto-Rotate and AI Private View are all designed to improve users experience;
  • HiCar smart travel for advanced, seamless connectivity between device and a car’s communication and entertainment system;
  • Multi-screen Collaboration allows users to transfer data and control multiple screens between Huawei devices;
  • HUAWEI 3D Face Unlock and In-screen Fingerprint to provide advanced data security and privacy protection with (HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro only)

While the Mate 30 Series runs EMUI 10, which is based on Android 10, there won’t be Google Apps on board when the phone releases. Due to current trade restrictions set forth by the U.S., the company is forbidden from working with companies like Google. While some of the more savvy users may think it’ll be easy enough to sideload Google Apps onto the device, it might not be that easy. If you’re interested, there is a pretty in-depth post over at XDA Developers explains why it may be more difficult to get Google Apps on the new Huawei smartphones. At any rate, it will be interesting to see how well the Mate 30 Series fares without Google Apps on board.
